Tokyo Raiders (Review)

Tokyo Raiders of the Lost Interest

Tokyo Raiders of the Lost Interest

I recently rented Infernal Affairs 2, but alas it was AFL grand final week and I had too much on at work and home to spare the time during the week to check it out.

So for some reason rather than cough up probably a buck for the late fee I took the movie back to the shop and rented this, having seen the preview on the Infernal Affairs 2 disc.

I still haven’t seen IF2, I have been told by my mate ‘T’ that it is very good, I can now tell him that Tokyo Raiders is not.

This appears as though they tried to make an Asian version of a James bond flick. The opening is basically a scene without any relation with the remainder of the film, aside from the fact that it introduces the Bond-like guy. The guy is Len, and as he wanders along the Tokyo street he is trailed by two unknown shady guys, who he dispatches with ease. He then saunters off and is chased by about 6 more guys, including a massive Sumo guy, he sends them all sprawling and then goes home, where he is attacked by about 6 more guys with guns, and he of course gets away once more with ease.

This is the sort of film where the good guys never get a scratch ever, regardless of how many assailants there are or how they come at ya. The violence is always carefully staged and copies Jackie Chan in giving some of the fights a theme, (only far more clumsily than Jackie).

The actual film revolves around a woman jilted at the altar, so she goes to Tokyo to hunt him down and find out just why, only another random guy (apparently an interior designer wanting payment of a bounced cheque!?!) insists upon tagging along.

What ensues brings gangsters, a counterfeit ring and private investigators into their orbit. No-one is who they say they are and the stage is set only to be dashed moments later.

The redeeming feature, if there must be one, is that the Private Investigator deliberately surrounds himself with hot assistants, though they are only briefly in the film, and the main actress Macy is undeniably hot, and as far as I could see can act a bit too.

Final Rating – 5.5 / 10. Shoulda watched Infernal Affairs 2. This is so lightweight that I forgot it straight after I watched it.

About OGR

While I try to throw a joke or two into proceedings when I can all of the opinions presented in my reviews are genuine. I don't expect that all will agree with my thoughts at all times nor would it be any fun if you did, so don't be shy in telling me where you think I went wrong... and hopefully if you think I got it right for once. Don't be shy, half the fun is in the conversation after the movie.
