Internal Affairs (Review)

internal_affairsA police sting goes bad. Someone is killed. An innocent someone… A plant is made. Someone must take the fall. An innocent someone will now be guilty… It isn’t the first time. The confidence And decisiveness of the perpetrator suggests it won’t be the last.

Internal affairs are called in. This is not popular. Internal affairs are never popular… Internal affairs suspect that foul play has taken place. They know that a crooked force is only as strong as the weakest link….

But the crooked cops didn’t get this far without learning some things. They are connected. They know people. People of power… They are willing to do anything to stay one step ahead. They are willing to sacrifice the weakest link…

Raymond (Andy Garcia) is the internal affairs cop desperate to get his man. Amy is his partner. Dennis (Richard Gere) is ‘his man’… Ray is diligent and logical. Dennis is smooth, super confident and always seems to have something up his sleeve…

Internal affairs are the natural enemy of both good cop and bad. They sometimes make it easier to root for the slightly shonky cop. Dennis is not slightly shonky. He is ‘all the way’ shonky. And smart. Smart enough to cover his trail. Smart enough to get away yet again…?

Internal affairs might be a late 80s thriller. It might not be action packed or incredibly memorable… But it is efficient. Well crafted. Meritorious even… Definitely better than I remembered. Definitely worth checking out.

Final Rating – 7.5 / 10. A nice little low key cop thriller with some good performances and compelling plot twists.

About OGR

While I try to throw a joke or two into proceedings when I can all of the opinions presented in my reviews are genuine. I don't expect that all will agree with my thoughts at all times nor would it be any fun if you did, so don't be shy in telling me where you think I went wrong... and hopefully if you think I got it right for once. Don't be shy, half the fun is in the conversation after the movie.
