The Invasion (Review)

The InvasionA space shuttle crash lands back on Earth after unspecified problems.

Within days though people start acting different. Removed from themselves somehow. More formal. Constantly offering beverages.

While the general public seem to take these things in their stride, Carole Bennell (Nicole Kidman) and Ben Driscoll (Daniel Craig) gradually start piecing things together. Not all is quite right.

There is much confusion, bewilderment and vomiting – and not all of it from the audience – as Carole moves determinedly to find her son as the rest of the population stand about as dispassionately as the grandparents at a toddler’s birthday party.

It’s ironic when they realise that the best chance to remain undiscovered is having no facial expression or emotion, this seems to play right into the over-booted Kidman’s hands. No excuses for Daniel Craig though, who despite not being ‘infected’ himself still keeps Ben as wooden as a stump.

More irony arrives when Carole learns that she cannot sleep for fear of letting the virus take control of her faculties. She spends the final stages of the film holding back the z’s.

Let’s just say she wasn’t the only one.

I’ve seen a few of these films over the years, none of them have proven much good. But this lowers the bar even further.

Final Rating – 5 / 10. We can only hope that when the real ‘invasion’ comes, that it is more thrilling than this, and that we fight it a hell of a lot harder than this version of humanity does.

About OGR

While I try to throw a joke or two into proceedings when I can all of the opinions presented in my reviews are genuine. I don't expect that all will agree with my thoughts at all times nor would it be any fun if you did, so don't be shy in telling me where you think I went wrong... and hopefully if you think I got it right for once. Don't be shy, half the fun is in the conversation after the movie.
