(The Brothers) Grimsby (Review

grimsby_ver2There was a time when Sacha Baron Cohen provoked reluctant laughs from the reactions of the unwitting, usually as they interacted with either Borat, Bruno or Ali G.

Now he just wants us to laugh at his interactions with body fluids and private parts, be they human or otherwise. Here he finds his face thrust into various genitals, and a key scene takes place inside a pachyderm…

SBC is Nobby, a soccer hooligan reunited with his estranged brother Sebastian (Mark Strong) and instantly placed at the heart of a multi continental man hunt after being fingered as a suspect of an attempted assassination.

Ha! ‘Fingered.’

And if that’s funny you’ll love this film. Most of the early jokes emanate from Nobby’s lack of decorum and a proclivity for larger women. So of course his ineptness must be on prominent display with astounding frequency and diminishing entertainment.

It was when he had to suck the poison from a man’s balls to save his life that I checked out. And that was an hour or so before a finale that even Will Ferrell would say ‘Too much!‘ to. I wasn’t offended, just bored.

I only wish Sacha Baron Cohen worked nearly as hard as the genital effects supervisor.

Ha! ‘Hard’.

Mark Strong keeps a straight face even while being unwillingly fellated. Penelope Cruz proves that comedy hasn’t worked for her this year (with Zoolander 2 she is batting 0-2 in 2016) and Sacha Baron Cohen may very well have proven that he is infinitely stronger when working without a script.

I used to feel sorry for those that found themselves in Baron Cohen’s razor sharp crosshairs, now I feel kinda sorry for him.

Final Rating – 5.5 / 10. Nobby checks the football scores in near death situations. I too was checking my phone frequently, just to distract me from the tedium onscreen.

About OGR

While I try to throw a joke or two into proceedings when I can all of the opinions presented in my reviews are genuine. I don't expect that all will agree with my thoughts at all times nor would it be any fun if you did, so don't be shy in telling me where you think I went wrong... and hopefully if you think I got it right for once. Don't be shy, half the fun is in the conversation after the movie.
