Mobsters (Review)

'Modern Gangster's' July catalogue was a success.

‘Modern Gangster’s’ July catalogue was a success.

After a couple weeks off the sauce altogether, this was the film that convinced me I needed a beer. I mean it was just so boring. So very boring.

The premise would have you believe that four young handsome, immaculately coiffed and perfectly cheekboned young men, two Jewish, two Italian, decided to elbow in to the illegal liquor racket in the midst of the prohibition era. This despite many older, better connected, and better armed guys already having all things related to the making and distribution of illegal alcohol well in hand.

And… They all get along famously and establish a joint venture where everyone profits and no one complains or is inconvenienced in any way

Right? …of course not. They do get to drive those cool 30s cars. They get to shoot those cool tommy guns with the big round ammunition clips. And they get to fraternise with the lovely young women in the big lacy fascinations.

But because of their boldness and an immaculate mix of brains and brawn, the young tyros not only get a look in, but are quite successful in the long run, so the closing credits tell us.
How much of this is true I cannot tell, nor do I want to look into it. This is a join the dots with two numbers, a hangman clue with one letter and a clue that says ‘it’s A’.

I can tell you that Christian Slater is in it as the brainy Italian, despite the fact that he is neither of those things. I can tell you that Michael Gambon and F. Murray Abraham are the older bad guys who don’t need or want young help. But thanks very much for asking.

I can tell you that this is gorier and bloodier than you might think. I can also tell you that it is as predictable as an athlete claiming they have no idea how the steroids got into their system, and as interesting as… a film with the above description could be.

Final Rating – 5.5 / 10. Can you believe there was a time when Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey, Costas Mandylor and Richard Grieco headlined anything?

About OGR

While I try to throw a joke or two into proceedings when I can all of the opinions presented in my reviews are genuine. I don't expect that all will agree with my thoughts at all times nor would it be any fun if you did, so don't be shy in telling me where you think I went wrong... and hopefully if you think I got it right for once. Don't be shy, half the fun is in the conversation after the movie.
