Society (Review)

Society-480233471-largeSociety is a film that will elicit countless different reactions. The one that I would least expect would be apathy. The first hour or so is a typically dated 80s film with pretty mulletted boys and pretty big haired girls. It contains a few moments that will have you double-take, but for the most part the thing you’ll be glancing at twice will be your watch.

But the last half hour… woah.

Billy is popular at his exclusive Beverly Hills school. He is on the basketball team, the debate team, talks to the guys everyone wants to talk to, and has a pretty girlfriend on his arm. It is at home where Billy feels an outsider, and not just because he was adopted.

The first hour consists of Billy meeting people who act a little strangely and seem to refer to ‘society’ a lot. In fact the most significant development comes when he is approached by the only girl in school hotter than his already girlfriend, and even she seems a little odd…

She talks about ‘society’ too. Almost everyone does. None moreso than Billy’s foster parents and sister, who yammer on about ‘society’ incessantly.

As a viewer you already know something is up. You know it’s coming. You just don’t know what ‘it’ is, even as the hints start becoming less and less subtle.

That said you still won’t be ready.

Sometimes it is better not to fit in.

Final Rating – 6.5 / 10. Realistically only one 20 minute nutbags scene. I didn’t like Society one bit, but some images in that sequence will likely stay with me for a while…

About OGR

While I try to throw a joke or two into proceedings when I can all of the opinions presented in my reviews are genuine. I don't expect that all will agree with my thoughts at all times nor would it be any fun if you did, so don't be shy in telling me where you think I went wrong... and hopefully if you think I got it right for once. Don't be shy, half the fun is in the conversation after the movie.
